In the reverse rags-to-riches story of DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, writer/actor David Spade's string of infectious laughs turn into waves of compassion. Former child star Dickie Roberts (Spade) has wound up working as a valet, dodging insults and lamely making attempts to regain his former glory with the help of his equally down-and-out agent, Sidney Wernick (Jon Lovitz). His buddy, the real-life recovering child star Leif Garrett, tells Dickie about a role in a Rob Reiner film that could revive Dickie's acting career. But Reiner is not convinced Dickie, whose mother and father left him at an early age, knows enough about normal life to nail the role. Dickie shows his commitment to the craft by moving in with a hired surrogate family to replicate the idea of childhood, but does not win points with his new Mom (Mary McCormack) when he introduces her kids to repugnant table manners, irreverent behavior, and foul language. As he absorbs the true meaning of tenderness and family, Dickie finally proves that he has something to offer each one of them.
Spade and executive producer Adam Sandler find classic comedy in this retro theme, which includes appearances from former child stars like Danny Bonaduce (Danny in THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) and Barry Williams (Greg from THE BRADY BUNCH). As with JOE DIRT (2001), Spade also shows a tender side, which is surprising coming from the king of deadpan one-liners and brutal sarcasm.

A breezy teen comedy molded on the CINDERELLA story, RATZ is an entertaining look at two girls and the lengths they go to to get dates for a school dance. Marci and Summer are the two teens in question, and as the date for the annual Spring Fling dance gets closer the two begin to despair over their chances of finding a date. They believe their prayers are answered when they obtain a magic ring that allows them to turn their pet rats into two attractive young men. This Australian romantic charmer stars Michela Noonan as She, a kind of post-modern Bridget Jones, who is thoroughly confused about sex and romantic love. Ironically, She is a modern day romantic obsessed with the poetry of Wordsworth (the title of the film is taken from a Wordsworth poem) and the movement of the period, but she also holds on to a staunch post-feminist notion that romance is a patriarchal trap to enslave women. Virginal and heady She is shy and socially awkward, she works tirelessly at a used bookstore in Melbourne and ponders the notion of romance and sex. One day at work she spots an attractive young man reading poetry and instantly falls for him until he disarms her by playfully attempting to come onto her. She is instantly confused and swears to find a proper sexual partner in a whirlwind of sexual confusion and hilarity. She's quest to lose her virginity leads her into the arms of quite a few unsuspecting partners including an activist lesbian (Anni Finsterer), a Spanish tutor (Steve Adams) and her gay best-friend (Mitchell Brutel). Her confusion is only deepened by her madcap sexual exploits as she routinely falls for a bevy of mismatched partners. Inspired by the 1970s animated television series, FAT ALBERT transports the loveable characters from their animated universe into the real world. When Doris (Kyla Pratt), a sad teenager in Philadelphia, turns on a rerun of FAT ALBERT AND THE COSBY KIDS, her tears compel the always-helpful Fat Albert to jump through the TV screen to her rescue. His friends quickly follow, and to Doris`s astonishment, the whole Fat Albert gang magically transforms into real live people right in her living room. Not knowing what to do with her odd new friends, Doris adamantly denies having a problem, and encourages the boys to jump back into the TV set. But Albert can see that Doris is lonely and is determined to find her some friends. As Albert tries to fix Doris`s problem, the rest of the gang tries to adjust to their new, unscripted world. Meanwhile, Albert finds himself falling in love with Doris`s foster sister, Lauri. But as soon as the gang begins to enjoy the perks of being real, their brightly colored outfits start to fade. Taking this as a sign that they do not belong in the real world, the boys decide it`s time to go home. Bill Cosby (co-writer of the film and creator of the original series) makes a guest appearance as himself, warning Albert that he must return to his animated world before evaporating into a cloud of celluloid dust. But before Albert can leave, he must solve Doris`s problem. Kenan Thompson (of Saturday Night Live fame) is charming as Albert, who demonstrates the power of believing in one`s self by never letting anything (including his size) get in the way of his goals.
