Monty Python's Life of Brian - Criterion Collection (DVD) Monty Python's Life of Brian - Criterion Collection (DVD) » Monty Python's Life of Brian - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Monty Python delivers a scathing, anarchic satire of both religion and Hollywood's depiction of all things biblical with their second--and tightest--full-length film. The setting is the Holy Land in 33 A.D., a time of poverty and chaos, with no shortage of messiahs, followers willing to believe in them, and exasperated Romans trying to impose some order. At the center of it all is Brian Cohen (Graham Chapman), a reluctant would-be messiah who rises to prominence as a result of a series of absurd and truly hilarious circumstances that parallel the life of Christ--providing ample opportunity for the entire ensemble (John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Chapman) to shine in multiple roles as they blaspheme and mock everyone and everything from ex-lepers, Pontius Pilate, and the art of haggling to crazy prophets, Roman centurions, and crucifixion.Directed by Python Terry Jones, MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN is an uproarious biblical parody that does to ancient Rome what THE HOLY GRAIL did to the Middle Ages. Rome is run by pathetic wimps, liberation fronts fight with each other over acronyms, and gladiators put on bloody children's matinees as the people search desperately for someone to lead them out of their life of misery and poverty. And Brian is that man. Sort of. Well, not really. Chapman excels as Brian, a simple, quiet man suddenly thrust in the role of leading the revolution--while constantly being yelled at by his shrew of a mother.Includes five deleted scenes andThe Pythons featurette on the comedy troupe.

When free-spirited but juvenile Walter Gib Gibson (John Cusack) meets studious, uptight Alison Bradbury (Daphne Zuniga) at an unnamed Ivy League college, sparks fly; unfortunately, they are mostly of the disastrous variety as all of Gib's attempts at courtship fall painfully apart. Inevitably, the duo is tossed together when they both answer the same ad for a ride to California. While Alison is traveling to reunite with her tidy law school boyfriend, Gib is on the road to meet a beautiful girl whom his best friend promises him is a sure thing. Before too long, Gib and Alison's bickering inflames the driver, who promptly deposits the two with their suitcases on the side of a lonely highway thousands of miles from their destination. As the misadventures pile up, the initially contentious pair begin to take a liking to one another, but do these two dare fall in love?Rob Reiner's initial attempt at romantic comedy pays subtle homage to the classic screwballs of early Hollywood with gentle lyricism. The film is buoyed by the stellar performances of the two leads, Cusack (in one of his first significant roles) and Zuniga, reminiscent of the great studio pairings of the past.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Additional Release Material: Theatrical TrailerText/Photo Gallery: Filmographies

In Don Bluth`s ROCK-A-DOODLE, Chanticleer (Glen Campbell) is a golden-tonsilled rooster who misses the arrival of the sun one morning and leaves the farm in disgrace to make his name in the big city. This entertaining children`s film is a story-within-a-story: ROCK-A-DOODLE is actually a beloved book owned by Edmond (Tony Scott Ganger), a little farm boy whose parents are desperately trying to save the family farm from an impending flood begun, according to Edmond`s book, by the wicked Grand Duke of Owls (Christopher Plummer). When Edmond tries to evoke Chanticleer to bring the sun back, the duke turns him into a kitten, transporting him into the animated world of the rooster and the other animals from his book. Thus begins a colorful journey filled with songs and adventure.
