Dabney Coleman stars as demolition contractor Stewart McBain in director John Boorman's WHERE THE HEART IS, a Capra-esque fable that harkens back to the populist comedies of the 1930s. When an architectural conservation group legally thwarts McBain's plans to vaporize the aging Dutch House apartments in Brooklyn, he's ridiculed for defending his actions in the media by the twentysomething layabout children who live off the fruits of his labor. Consequently the affluent businessmen decides to teach them a lesson by depositing them in the decrepit Dutch House with $750 each. Once there, Chloe (Suzy Amis), Jimmy (David Hewlett), and Daphne (Uma Thurman) decide to take on boarders to help with the expenses. Among them are Lionel (Crispin Glover), an aspiring clothing designer who pretends to be gay in order to be taken seriously, and Sheryl (Sheila Kelley), a young student who gives a demonstration of glossolalia (speaking in tongues), her area of study. Chloe, an artist who specializes in body-painting her friends against a backdrop of well-known masterpieces, decides to channel her talents into calendar art. In the reverse rags-to-riches story of DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, writer/actor David Spade's string of infectious laughs turn into waves of compassion. Former child star Dickie Roberts (Spade) has wound up working as a valet, dodging insults and lamely making attempts to regain his former glory with the help of his equally down-and-out agent, Sidney Wernick (Jon Lovitz). His buddy, the real-life recovering child star Leif Garrett, tells Dickie about a role in a Rob Reiner film that could revive Dickie's acting career. But Reiner is not convinced Dickie, whose mother and father left him at an early age, knows enough about normal life to nail the role. Dickie shows his commitment to the craft by moving in with a hired surrogate family to replicate the idea of childhood, but does not win points with his new Mom (Mary McCormack) when he introduces her kids to repugnant table manners, irreverent behavior, and foul language. As he absorbs the true meaning of tenderness and family, Dickie finally proves that he has something to offer each one of them.
Spade and executive producer Adam Sandler find classic comedy in this retro theme, which includes appearances from former child stars like Danny Bonaduce (Danny in THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) and Barry Williams (Greg from THE BRADY BUNCH). As with JOE DIRT (2001), Spade also shows a tender side, which is surprising coming from the king of deadpan one-liners and brutal sarcasm.

In Steven Brill's WITHOUT A PADDLE, three friends embark on a hilariously dangerous adventure through the woods of the Pacific Northwest. When their childhood friend Billy dies, 30-year-old buddies Dan (Seth Green), Tom (Dax Shepard), and Jerry (Matthew Lillard) return home to pay their respects. While there, they unearth a map that Billy left behind, which may or may not lead to a hidden treasure. Dan is a germ-phobic doctor who would rather spend his time anywhere but in the wilderness, but the recently dumped Jerry and down-on-his-luck Tom are intent on fulfilling their friend's lifelong dream; and so begins the trio's journey. It isn't long before things begin to spiral out of control. Starting with a gigantic bear that mistakes Dan for one of its own, the guys are also on the run from two pot-growing maniacs (Ethan Suplee, Abraham Benrubi) who are looking for revenge after their marijuana farm is burned to a crisp. Of course, what would a wilderness expedition be without raging rapids, a towering waterfall, beautiful (but hairy) hippy chicks, and an encounter with a menacing mountain man (Burt Reynolds).
