CHASING PAPI, from first-time director Linda Mendoza, is a light-hearted romp with Latin flair. Tomas (Eduardo Verastegui) is every woman's dream--successful, smart, attractive, sensitive, and sexy. In short, he's a catch, and a hunk. Unfortunately, his one major flaw is that he is in love with three very different women, none of who knows about each other. Sexy, sassy CiCi (Sofia Vergara) is a cocktail waitress in Miami, bookish attorney Lorena (Roselyn Sanchez) lives in Chicago, and classy New Yorker Patricia is a diplomat's daughter and a momma's girl. In deference to their respective horoscopes, all three women plan surprise visits to their beau. Of course, they all descend upon his Los Angeles home at the same time, much to Tomas' shock. To make matters worse, CiCi is unknowingly in possession of a bag of counterfeit cash, leading to more confusion and hijinx that includes gangsters and the FBI. Ultimately, the film is as much about women asserting their independence and discovering their strengths as it is about male/female relationships. Happy-go-lucky hairdresser Rick Jarmin (Mel Gibson) did a good turn fifteen years ago when he gave the government a much-needed testimony in a court case that put a dangerous drug dealer behind bars. The Witness Protection Program kept up its side of the bargain, moving him around over the years and hiding his identity. Now they have him working in a Detroit gas station, but his cover is blown when a former girlfriend, Marianne Graves (Goldie Hawn) discovers Rick at about the same time that the now-released, and very angry, drug dealer has caught up to him. A shootout ensues and Rick and his ex barely escape with their lives. Now the former lovers must flee together; on the run, they rediscover their shared past as they desperately try to keep one step ahead of the killers.
