Tolen (Ray Brooks) has it. Colin (Michael Crawford) doesn't. It is the knack for getting women into bed. After obtaining lessons from the master, Colin buys a bed big enough for his conquests. This leads Colin and his friend Tom (Donal Donnelly) to Nancy (Rita Tushingham), an attractive traveler. The boys vie for her affections, but when she meets Tolen, she faints, overcome by his charm. Nancy awakens thinking she has been raped and points her finger at the hapless Colin.As films age they are commonly seen as tame by today's standards. This is not the case with this outrageously loose 1965 portrait of Swinging London. A revolutionary film, this amoral slapstick combined the rapid-fire-gag approach used by director Richard Lester in his previous work with the Beatles (A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, HELP!) with the awareness of technique popularized by the French New Wave. The style of filmmaking perfectly captures the time period and was also highly influential to the film school generation of the late 1960s and early 1970s. John Barry's playful score fusing jazz and pop sets the frenetic pace. Soccer is one of the world's most popular sports, and this delightful Spanish comedy weaves a touching tale of reconciliation around the game. Antonio decides to get his life back on track when he is released from prison by rounding up his friends and reforming the old soccer team they played in as kids. Seeing his friends succumbing to various personal woes, Antonio believes they'll all benefit from the rejuvenating effects of a good soccer game. Similar in spirit to John Huston's soccer flick VICTORY (1981) and BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM, DIAS DE FUTBOL is an affecting film about the uplifting powers of sport.

Director Brian Levant (BEETHOVEN) goes to the dogs again in Disney's SNOW DOGS. Cuba Gooding, Jr. stars as Ted Brooks, a successful Miami dentist who finds out that he was adopted, and has to travel to Alaska for the reading of his birth mother's will. There, he meets the small community of crazies that were his mother's friends. Barb (Joanna Bacalso), a beautiful bar owner, is the most welcoming. Ted learns that he has inherited his mother's property, including her team of rambunctious sled dogs. A crusty old-timer, Thunder Jack (James Coburn), tries to buy the dogs, but Ted decides he will learn how to race a dogsled, and enter the Arctic Challenge, a local race. Handling the mischievous pooches, particularly the alpha dog, Demon, turns out to be much harder than expected. Levant keeps the action moving at a swift pace, particularly during Ted's hilariously disastrous first run with the dogs. Gooding clowns like a pro, and Coburn is wonderful as the grizzled dogsled veteran. Kids will fall in love with all the dogs, who are given animated facial expressions. A childless couple unable to adopt decide that a couple who just had quintuplets won't mind if they steal one of the babies. Thus begins the Coen brothers' madcap romp RAISING ARIZONA. Holly Hunter stars as Ed, a cop who is devastated when she learns that she cannot get pregnant. Nicolas Cage is her husband, H.I., an ex-con who wants nothing more than to make his wife the happiest woman in the world. So if she wants a baby, she's going to have a baby, one way or another.Heading up the supporting cast of bizarre characters are John Goodman and William Forsythe as crazy cousins who have just busted out of prison, Sam McMurray and Frances McDormand as Ed and H.I.'s swinging friends, and Randall Tex Cobb as a motorcycle madman hired to rescue the baby. RAISING ARIZONA is the Coen brothers' most consistently funny film. Carter Burwell's score, replete with infectious yodeling, is relentless, Barry Sonnenfeld's cinematography is beautifully wacky, and the manic dialogue is the brothers' most quotable.
