Director Nick Gomez is known for gritty urban street tales like LAWS OF GRAVITY and NEW JERSEY DRIVE. So while the subject matter of DROWNING MONA isn't necessarily a departure, the film's farcical tone certainly is. During the opening credits, the despicable Mona Dearly (Bette Midler) is seen driving her Yugo into the Hudson River. This sets off an investigation headed up by Chief Rash (Danny DeVito), who quickly determines that Mona was murdered. Now his problem is that everyone who knew the woman is a possible suspect. Her self-described battered husband, Phil (William Fichtner), her unnaturally dumb son, Jeff (Marcus Thomas), and her son's much-abused, good-natured landscaping partner, Bobby Calzone (Casey Affleck) all have motives. Complicating matters, Phil and Jeff were both having an affair with the same waitress (Jamie Lee Curtis) and Bobby is engaged to Chief Rash's lovely daughter, Ellen (Neve Campbell). When wide-eyed and innocent Sean McGinnis (Michael Cunio) moves to Los Angeles to make it big in the movies, he quickly finds work on the sets of gay pornography films. There he does odd jobs, among them performing as a fluffer for a hot porn star called Johnny Rebel (Scott Gurney.) A young man still coming to terms with his homosexuality, Sean becomes instantly smitten with Rebel, who is straight and lives with his stripper girlfriend. Even when Sean meets a gay man who shows interest in him, he remains obsessed with the self-absorbed and narcissistic Rebel. As Rebel increasingly abuses drugs and his girlfriend, Sean keeps making excuses for him. Meek, owlish writer Felix (George Segal) and strident, catty prostitute Doris (Barbra Streisand) live in the same apartment building. His incessant typing bothers her; her gentlemen callers bother him. When Felix reports Doris's rowdy activity to their landlord, she gets evicted. The free-spirited Doris then forces her way into Felix's apartment, as well as his heart.
