This strange balance plays heavily into the Steven Shainberg-directed SECRETARY, based on a short story by Mary Gaitskill. Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a troubled young woman with a secret, destructive addiction fueled by her mother's overprotectiveness and her father's alcoholism. Sheltered and wholly dependent on other people, Lee's only form of self-expression is in this private, painful habit. That is, until she meets her new boss, the lawyer E. Edward Gray (James Spader), who hires her as his secretary. It is exciting for Lee to hold down a job, even if she is a basket case in the office. Mr. Gray watches Lee, studies her, and slowly begins to correct both her typing errors and her personality flaws. At first Mr. Gray's dominance appears scary and overbearing, a true threat to Lee's naive, fragile psyche. But as the film carefully develops these unique characters, revealing their odd strengths and weaknesses, it becomes delightfully clear that Lee and Mr. Gray can genuinely help each other. In their youth, the Tenenbaums--an eccentric New York family--were extraordinary. They were all geniuses. Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) was a successful litigator. His wife Etheline (Angelica Huston) raised their children to be ambitious, entrepreneurial, and creative--then published an acclaimed book about her child-rearing techniques. The brilliant script is impeccable with choppy, intentionally awkward language delivered with dry wit by the well-appointed (almost too good to be true) cast. Dramatic sets are emphasized by the film's masterful orchestration of scene changes and chapter separations. The photography beautifully captures a faded, vintage 1980s New York. From the producers of the popular LIZZIE MCGUIRE SHOW, PHIL OF THE FUTURE is another family sitcom aired on the Disney Channel. GADGETS AND GIZMOS contains four episodes of the comedic program. Phil Diffy`s family lived in the year 2121, but a mishap with their time machine during a vacation has trapped them in 2004. While Phil`s dad figures out a way to return them to home, Phil poses as a typical high-school student, albeit one with a set of amazing technological gadgets at home. However, those high-tech gizmos, along with his mischievous sister Pim, often get Phil and his best friend Keely into big trouble. In the episodes collected here, a series of dilemmas arise when Phil, Pim, and Keely use an invisibility spray, an aging device, and a shrink ray.
