Michael Ritchie revisits the satirical territory of 1975's SMILE with this hysterical comedy about professional football, New Age lifestyles, and bizarre health remedies. Teammates and roommates Billy Clyde B.C. Puckett (Burt Reynolds) and Marvin Shake Tiller (Kris Kristofferson) find their lives upended when they both begin to fall for the same woman, Barbara Jane B.J. Bookman (Jill Clayburgh). Making matters even worse is the dangerous knowledge that B.J. just so happens to be their coach's daughter. Eventually, things get even weirder when Shake finds himself falling under the hypnotic spell of a wacky cult leader. All the while, the team is trying to win a game on the field, even if the players can't seem to keep their lives together when the pads are off.Ritchie's sensitive approach to the potentially two-dimensional material is what makes SEMI-TOUGH such a rewarding viewing experience. After being dumped by his girlfriend, Peter Rooker (Marcus Thomas) finds himself in a rut. Bored with his job and lacking any close friends, Peter spends his free time sitting on a couch parked in his front lawn in the company of several neighborhood cats. It is this sense of purposelessness that attracts Peter to the poster he passes every morning announcing auditions for the upcoming Portland community theater production of CYRANO DE BERGERAC. Wondering whether this might be the breath of fresh air he`s been looking for, Peter hesitantly buys the play and starts reading it over. After days of deliberating, he finally forces himself into the audition room, where, despite his undeniably terrible reading, he is given the play`s starring role by a director (Claire Higgins) who senses a fire and passion beneath Peter`s dull exterior.In order to pull off Cyrano and stand up to the flamboyant, overwhelming personalities of the theater, Peter must become less of a pushover. Through rehearsals, and middle-of-the-night visits from eccentric cast members like over-the-top Michael Degan (SEX AND THE CITY`s John Corbett), Peter is forced to come out of his shell and take on a more active role on the stage, and off. Aside from growing as an actor, the theater community encourages Peter to take a chance on people, forging relationships with the likes of Grace (Amy Smart), the play`s leading lady, and shared love interest of Peter and Michael. This small film touches on the sense of community that small productions foster, and captures the strong personalities so often found in the theatre. A true theater lover`s film, BIGGER THAN THE SKY is an uplifting story about finding one`s own voice and believing in one`s own potential.

THE GOOD GIRL, directed by Miguel Arteta and written by Mike White, stars Jennifer Aniston as Justine, a sullen 30-year-old woman stuck in a dead-end job at the Retail Rodeo department store. In addition to her mind-numbing occupation, Justine also has to contend with her dim-witted husband, Phil (John C. Reilly), and his partner, Bubba (Tim Blake Nelson), who work as house painters when they aren't smoking pot and staring blankly at the television. Justine sees an opportunity for change, however, when she meets Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal), a fellow Retail Rodeo employee who is even more depressed than herself. The young Holden (who patterns himself after Holden Caulfield of J.D. Salinger's THE CATCHER IN THE RYE) and Justine soon begin a passionate secret affair, unaware that it may not be so secret after all.With THE GOOD GIRL, Arteta and White, the creators of the indie hit CHUCK& BUCK, have fashioned yet another oddly affecting comedy out of misery and obsession. Playing the polar opposite of the character she plays on the TV show FRIENDS, Aniston is outstanding as Justine, a melancholy wife torn between the temptation of an affair and loyalty to her husband. Gyllenhaal is excellent as Justine's angst-ridden younger beau, while Reilly plays her slacker spouse to perfection. Also notable in their supporting roles are Nelson, who portrays a scheming stoner; screenwriter White, who appears as Retail Rodeo's pious security guard; and Zooey Deschanel, who gleefully dispenses sarcasm as a customer-hating clerk. A delicate balance of dark humor and sincere emotion, THE GOOD GIRL stands out as an overachieving film about underachieving people.
