Taking a page from the career of his old friend Jack Nicholson, Hopper tries remaking THE LAST DETAIL. The film stars Tom Berenger as Rock Reilly, a veteran navy officer who has been assigned to Shore Patrol duty to escort Toni Johnson (Erika Eleniak), a young woman of inhumanly perfect proportions. She's on her way to the base brig, having been unjustly convicted of assault and going AWOL. Aside from keeping an eye on his slick prisoner, he also has to watch out for Eddie Devane (William McNamara), the hustling young swabby who is supposed to be helping him guard the prisoner. But Eddie is so enslaved by Toni's charms that his mind is effectively AWOL. Thus, after her many attempts at escape have been frustrated, she realizes it's time to focus her attentions on Eddie's obsession with her. Two twin sisters complain about having to take a vacation to the Bahamas causing them to miss an opportunity to tour Hawaii with their friends. The girls soon discover that the lush tropical setting, horseback riding, and befriending sea animals all gives the Bahamas a certain appeal. The appearance of some sweet, handsome young men enable the girls to make some more discoveries as well. Soon, though, their island paradise clouds over with danger when antique smugglers cross the sisters' paths. The sequel to Eddie Murphy's smash hit family comedy, DR DOLITTLE, will certainly not disappoint fans of the first film. Murphy returns as the doctor, who has now garnered some measure of fame for his communication abilities, at least among the animal kingdom. Dolittle is also dealing with his rebellious teenage daughter (Raven Symone). But he drops everything when he's summoned by The Beaver, the Godfather figure of the local forest, to help the animals preserve their home by stopping an overly aggressive lumber company. To save the forest, Dolittle has to take a trained performing bear (also an endangered species, who is endearingly voiced by Steve Zahn)--and introduce him to the wild to find a mate. Zahn's bear, who would rather star on Broadway than hibernate in the woods, is the comedic heart of the film, but there's an entertaining array of colorful animal characters, including Lucky the dog (Norm Macdonald reprising his role from the first film) and Pepito (Jacob Vargas), a chameleon who can't quite seem to blend in. LE DIVORCE, based on the novel by Diane Johnson, is a contemporary Merchant/Ivory production that explores the fundamental differences between Americans and the French, especially in matters of the heart and manners. Isabel (Kate Hudson) is a brash, outspoken Californian who travels to Paris to help her pregnant expatriot sister Roxeanne (Naomi Watts). Once there she finds that Roxeanne's cheating husband (Melvil Poupaud) has abandoned her for his sexy mistress. Determined to help Roxeanne, Isabel settles in and quickly succumbs to the charms of Paris, including its men. She embarks on her own affair with Edgar (Thierry Lhermitte), the married brother of Suzanne de Persand (Leslie Caron), Roxeanne's bourgeois mother-in-law, and falls into the stereotypical life of a French mistress, receiving expensive Hermes gifts, and undergoing a chic cultural makeover. Picking up soon after the events of the first film, this inspired sequel opens with agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) back in action against a team of lady bank robbers, only to have her cover blown by her newfound fame. In an effort to capitalize on the publicity--and as a result of being dumped by her boyfriend from the first film--Gracie lets herself be made into the feel-good ambassador of the FBI, helped by the staggeringly hip Joel (Dietrich Bader) and his stylists. The change is not good for the brash Ms. Hart, however, who is soon appearing on morning television and dispensing fashion tips instead of girl-power platitudes. Of course this phase doesn't last long; some goons out in Las Vegas kidnap Miss Congeniality (Heather Burns) and host Stan Fields (William Shatner), prompting Hart, with her intensely angry bodyguard, Sam Fuller (Regina King), to strap on her guns and get back in the game. Her method of operation includes beating up Dolly Parton, defying a sexist FBI bigwig (Treat Williams), and faking cramps. At one point she disguises herself as an old Jewish woman in a wheelchair, and later she's a Las Vegas showgirl doing Proud Mary at a drag club.Bullock's good-natured performance recalls the old-school comedic talents of Bob Hope or Barbara Stanwyck; she effortlessly makes Gracie Hart a unique and complex woman who is capable, sarcastic, intuitive, impressionable, and a secretly lonely tomboy. Also a plus is the refreshing lack of a male romantic interest as Hart and Fuller don't need some handsome guy to ride to their rescue and they aren't going to let sexual discrimination stop them from getting the job done.
