A terrific cast of coots--George Burns, Lee Strasberg, and Art Carney--star as three elderly roommates who pull a daring bank heist out of sheer boredom. Frustrated by their quiet and routine existence, Joe (Burns) convinces his two friends, Al (Carney) and Willie (Strasberg), that they have nothing to lose, so they plan a daredevil robbery in the twilight of their lives. The eccentric trio is given a boost of exuberance and energy executing the hapless caper, but their real difficulties begin when they actually pull off the heist and are faced with a new way of living. Directly following the robbery, Willie dies from a heart attack, and Joe and Al are left to contemplate the meaning of their lives and their newfound fortune. So they decide to make the best of their situation and head to Vegas. The three Hollywood legends are positively magnificent in this debut film from screenwriter-director Martin Brest, who delivers deft direction and a deliriously charming and touching script. The Coen brothers have done it again. Mixing in Leninist philosophy, mistaken identity, crazy characters, a kidnapping plot, and a deep love of bowling, they have unleashed upon an unsuspecting world the many glories of THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Jeff Bridges plays Jeff Lebowski, known as the Dude, a laid-back, easygoing burnout who happens to have the same name as a millionaire whose wife owes a lot of dangerous people a whole bunch of money--resulting in the Dude having his rug soiled, sending him spiraling into the Los Angeles underworld.The film is beautiful to look at, especially the scenes in the bowling alley, which feature a vast array of bizarre characters--including Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Sam Elliott, and the movie-stealing, riotously funny John Goodman as the Dude`s crazy best buddy. As usual in Coen brothers films (BARTON FINK, RAISING ARIZONA), the dialogue is hysterically warped; the plot is confusing, complicated, and kinetic; the soundtrack is virtually another character; and the acting is weirdly stellar. THE BIG LEBOWSKI is yet another thoroughly entertaining foray into the strange and fascinating world ruled by Joel and Ethan Coen.

In 1960, Marcello Mastroianni (LA DOLCE VITA) starred in BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET, a comic drama about a group of inept crooks. This sequel sees the original gang emerging from a 20-year jail sentence and embarking on further criminal activities--with predictably hilarious results. Both Mastroianni and Vittorio Gassman (SLEEPERS) return from the original film to reprise their roles as two members of the hapless gang.
