It Happened to Jane (DVD) It Happened to Jane (DVD) » It Happened to Jane (DVD)

A little-known gem from 1959, this romantic comedy stars Doris Day (THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH), Jack Lemmon (SOME LIKE IT HOT), and Ernie Kovacs (BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE) in a classic tale of a small-town, underdog triumph over corrupt, big-business interests. Jane Osgood (Day) is a widowed mother who runs a struggling lobster business in coastal Maine, while Harry Malone (Kovacs) is a wealthy businessman who has bought out the local railroad. He harbors big plans for it, aiming to transform it into a luxury passenger train, replacing the freight train the residents of the area depend upon. When a large lobster shipment of Jane's is rerouted and returned to her dead, she decides to fight back, and sues Malone with the help of her longtime friend and lawyer George Denham. This instigates a battle of increasingly epic proportions, as Malone uses every trick in the book--as well as his massive bank account--to quell the resolve of the spitfire businesswoman; Jane, for her part, has public sympathy on her side. A reporter for the national news doing a story on Jane (Steve Forrest, MOMMIE DEAREST) begins to fall in love with her, and she is forced to decide between the romantic journalist and her childhood friend, George. The magical pairing of Lemmon and Day is augmented by the beautiful location photography in Maine and a stellar supporting cast including Mary Wickes (NOW, VOYAGER), Russ Brown (MOULIN ROUGE), and a rare film appearance from Kovacs.DVD Features:Region (unknown)Keep CaseAnamorphic Widescreen - 1.85Audio: Mono - English Subtitles - English, French, Japanese - Optional

Miss Congeniality 2/Two Weeks Notice (DVD) Miss Congeniality 2/Two Weeks Notice (DVD) » Miss Congeniality 2/Two Weeks Notice (DVD)

MISS CONGENIALITY 2: Picking up three months after the events of the first film, this inspired sequel opens with agent Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock) back in action against a team of lady bank robbers, only to have her cover blown by her newfound fame. In an effort to capitalize on the publicity--and as a result of being dumped by her boyfriend from the first film--Gracie lets herself be made into the feel-good ambassador of the FBI, helped by the staggeringly hip Joel (Dietrich Bader) and his stylists. The change is not good for the brash Ms. Hart, however, who is soon appearing on morning television and dispensing fashion tips instead of girl-power platitudes. Of course this phase doesn't last long; some goons out in Las Vegas kidnap Mrs. Congeniality (Heather Burns) and host Stan Fields (William Shatner), prompting Hart, with her intensely angry bodyguard, Sam Fuller (Regina King), to strap on her guns and get back in the game. Her method of operation includes beating up Dolly Parton, defying a sexist FBI bigwig (Treat Williams), and faking cramps. At one point she disguises herself as an old Jewish woman in a wheelchair, and later she's a Las Vegas showgirl doing Proud Mary at a drag club.Bullock's good-natured performance recalls the old-school comedic talents of Bob Hope or Barbara Stanwyck; she effortlessly makes Gracie Hart a unique and complex woman who is capable, sarcastic, intuitive, impressionable, and a secretly lonely tomboy. Also a plus is the refreshing lack of a male romantic interest as Hart and Fuller don't need some handsome guy to ride to their rescue and they aren't going to let sexual discrimination stop them from getting the job done.TWO WEEKS NOTICE: Opposites attract in the directorial debut of screenwriter Marc Lawrence. Determined activist, lawyer, and idealist Lucy Kelson (Sandra Bullock) has a noble reason for accepting a top position at Wade Realty Corporation. By taking the job, she can save the beloved community cen...

The Importance of Being Earnest - Criterion Collection (DVD) The Importance of Being Earnest - Criterion Collection (DVD) » The Importance of Being Earnest - Criterion Collection (DVD)

Anthony Asquith, having directed a wonderful film of George Bernard Shaw's PYGMALION, turned in 1952 to another classic, one of the greatest theatrical comedies, Oscar Wilde's THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST. Set at the height of the Victorian era, popularly imagined to be a cold and repressive time, the visual contrast with 1950s Technicolor only seems to enhance Wilde's sharp satire and droll epigrams.Cast with talented veterans of the English stage, even the minor characters are a delight. Asquith allows the actors, particularly the female roles, to deliver Wilde's dialogue in a ringing theatrical voice. Edith Evans as the imperious Lady Bracknell, full of strident tone and rolling R's, and always in high dudgeon, strikes fear in the heart of Jack (Michael Redgrave), while Joan Greenwood as the beautiful, opinionated Gwendolyn (who could never marry a man named Jack), melts his heart in a voice that practically purrs.Wilde's use of a convoluted, improbable story, much imitated in the screwball comedies of the 1930s, never detracts from the pure enjoyment of his characters silly yet heartfelt struggles. Asquith's staging and directing is smooth and fluid, thus retaining a theatrical feel. This gives today's viewer a sense of what Victorian audiences must have felt when they first beheld the breathless pace and matchless wit of the incomparable Oscar Wilde.DVD Features:Region 1Keep CaseFull Frame - 1.33Single Side - Dual LayerAudio: Mono - EnglishAdditional Release Material: Trailer - 1. Monty Python & the Holy Grail S.E. (WS/DVD) Monty Python & the Holy Grail S.E. (WS/DVD) » Monty Python & the Holy Grail S.E. (WS/DVD)

This classic Monty Python comedy, directed by Pythons Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones, is a hilarious send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen. In addition to the set pieces, the film also includes the same kind of surreal animation that Gilliam contributed to the television series. Throughout the irreverent adventures, the Python crew eschews realism in favor of anachronistic social satire, a recipe it later returned to in the 1979 biblical farce MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN. Melding the ridiculous with the sublime, the film quickly inspired a cult following, generated a host of quotes, and even inspired a computer game 20 years after its release. The numerous songs and hysterical vignettes are sidesplittingly unforgettable.DVD Features:Region 1 EncodingKeep CaseSpecial Features: Bonus Trailers, Scene Selections.
