In 1992, a sketch comedy program debuted with little fanfare. With minimal promotional push on a struggling network, THE BEN STILLER SHOW only lasted 12 episodes despite critical raves. Though short lived, the series had a great impact on American comedy. The sardonic skits and pop culture savvy would become staples of comedic fare in the following years. And the young cast of unknowns (Ben Stiller, Andy Dick, Jeneane Garofalo, and Bob Odenkirk) would go on to perform in and create some of the most memorably hilarious works of the ensuing decade, THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW, NEWS RADIO, and MR. In the sharply funny LEGALLY BLONDE, Reese Witherspoon gives a glittering performance as Elle Woods, the natural blonde sorority queen who enrolls at Harvard Law School. When she first appears, Elle seems to be no more than the bright cousin of CLUELESS's Alicia Silverstone. Expecting her boyfriend Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis) to propose, she is mortified when instead he says he needs somebody serious as his wife. When Elle discovers Warner's brother is engaged to a law student, she decides to go to Harvard. She studies for the LSATs, submits a video essay--in which she appears in a sequined bikini--and, miraculously, is accepted. At first, Elle is rebuked by Professor Stromwell (Holland Taylor) and is the target of snide comments from other students. But, gradually, it becomes clear that Elle is no fish out of water--she is smarter, more driven, and more likely to survive in the rarefied Harvard atmosphere than anyone else.Witherspoon gets fine support from Selma Blair as Warner's new fiancee, Jennifer Coolidge as a beautician, Victor Garber as an unscrupulous professor, Ali Larter as a client from Elle's sorority, Holland Taylor, and Luke Wilson as a lawyer fascinated by Elle's unconventional approach. The smart, witty script is by Karen McCullah and Kirsten Smith. An eighth grader named Jason (Frankie Muniz from MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE) presents elaborate excuses for never completing his class assignments. Finally his teacher catches him in one of his worst lies ever, and she threatens him with summer school if he doesn't get his assignment to her by that evening. With all that experience as a creative fibber, Jason writes a brilliant story entitled BIG FAT LIAR. With five minutes to spare, Jason races to get it to his teacher when a limousine crashes into him. The occupant, a sneaky Hollywood producer named Marty Wolf (Paul Giamatti) gives Jason a ride, and Jason accidentally drops his assignment in the limo. Jason has to go to summer school and it sucks. But when he sees a preview for the movie that Marty made from the his story, he decides to exact revenge on the producer. He enlists Kaylee (Amanda Bynes), his best friend, to help him on his mission. Over Thanksgiving break, while most of their friends are away, a group of college pals decide to throw a party in their dorm, and the aftermath has strange effects on everyone. Pretty boy Andrew (Michael Muhney) wakes up with Shayna (Mary Kay Cook), his roommate Joe`s (Jim Slonina) dream girl. But when Shayna starts a relationship with Joe, attempting to make Andrew jealous, it causes a rift in the boys` friendship. This college comedy was filmed at Northern Illinois University.
