Sofia Coppola's second feature-length film focuses on two guests at a Tokyo hotel--Bob (Bill Murray), a middle-aged actor in town to film whiskey commercials, and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), the young wife of a trendy photographer (Giovanni Ribisi) who is always out on a shoot. When Bob isn't on the job taking fragmented direction from the Japanese crew, he's receiving faxes on home decorating from his emotionally distant wife. And while her husband is away, Charlotte spends most of her time trying to motivate herself to do more than look out the window at Tokyo's urban sprawl. So when the two meet in the hotel bar, they strike up an unusual friendship, one that provides a welcome escape from their boredom and loneliness.With LOST IN TRANSLATION, Coppola cements her reputation as a thoughtful and inventive filmmaker. Every element of the movie is pitch-perfect, from the dreamy, atmospheric score to the expertly timed editing to the lingering shots of the characters and the city. Jerry (Cuba Gooding Jr.) and Nick (Horatio Sanz) are a couple of horny heterosexual buddies who mistakenly embark on a gay singles cruise in this lewd comedy. Felicia (Vivica Fox) is the girlfriend who dumps Jerry, causing him to accompany his abrasive pal Nick on what they both think will be a voyage packed with hot single women. By the time they realize their mistake, the ship is already out to sea. Over-the-top shock and repulsion eventually subsides with the arrival of some timely hetero intervention: The ship`s sole female employee (Roselyn Sanchez) comes to Jerry`s rescue, and Nick lucks out with the sudden arrival of a castaway Swedish female sun-tanning team. Alas, Jerry has to pretend to be gay to keep Sidney`s trust, and the sex-starved Swedes are guarded by their strict (but even hornier) dyke coach. Pratfalls and prancing ensue making BOAT TRIP a voyage to hilarity. Of the cast members, Sanchez stands out in a performance that`s both warmly human and sexy, while Roger Moore steals the show in an amusing riff on his James Bond persona. Will Farrell soars to new comedic heights as the mischievous travel agent. WIDESCREEN.

After falling from the window of a New York City apartment, a man named Thomas (Martin Donovan) awakens as an amnesiac. Wandering into a diner, he meets Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert), an former nun who writes pornography while waiting patiently for God to reveal her mission in life. A deeply spiritual yet sexually curious woman who has yet to be physically intimate with anyone, Isabelle invites Thomas to stay at her apartment, where she propositions him. Though Thomas now seems kindhearted, as he and Isabelle search out his true identity, they come upon some unpleasant truths about the man he was.Hal Hartley's AMATEUR carries the tone of mystery and imminent violence inherit in Hollywood thrillers while retaining the director's quirky and unique aesthetic. Hartley regulars Donovan and Lowensohn are in fine form and well-matched by the elegant yet naive Huppert. The film also includes appearances by Parker Posey, Dwight Ewell, and Tim Blake Nelson. A bizarre romp of a Canadian road movie, the premise of AMERICAN BEER is one that many Gen-Xers will identify with: four young men have left their Alberta homeland to travel to California in pursuit of cheap beer and a good time. Of course their vehicle is sub-par, and breaks down in the middle of the Badlands; the four split up to go in search of the necessary alternator, each encountering the underbelly of American culture in a particularly riotous way. They experience love, crime, danger, and even a little insight along the way, With plenty of lowbrow humor and slapstick capers.
