Jim Carrey returns to his zany, manic roots in this Capraesque comedy from director Tom Shadyac (ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE and LIAR LIAR). Carrey stars as Bruce Nolan, a television reporter in Buffalo, New York who lives a normal life with his sweet girlfriend Grace (Jennifer Aniston). But Bruce isn't satisfied, and after a particularly bad day where everything goes wrong, he blames God. After spewing a tirade of curses God's way, God (Morgan Freeman in a gentlemanly white suit) responds and challenges Bruce to take over and see if he can run things better. Of course, there are some conditions; Bruce can only have the almighty powers for 24 hours and only in the Buffalo area. This doesn't stop Bruce, and he responds to his newfound powers with selfish, childlike zeal. Like a kid in a candy store, Bruce sets off making one hysterical, yet disastrous, decision after another. He pulls the moon closer to the earth so he can have a more romantic evening with Grace, unaware that his actions cause a tidal wave in Japan and responds to the prayers of the world with a mass-email yes that creates millions of lottery winners, riots, and mayhem. Dabney Coleman stars as demolition contractor Stewart McBain in director John Boorman's WHERE THE HEART IS, a Capra-esque fable that harkens back to the populist comedies of the 1930s. When an architectural conservation group legally thwarts McBain's plans to vaporize the aging Dutch House apartments in Brooklyn, he's ridiculed for defending his actions in the media by the twentysomething layabout children who live off the fruits of his labor. Consequently the affluent businessmen decides to teach them a lesson by depositing them in the decrepit Dutch House with $750 each. Once there, Chloe (Suzy Amis), Jimmy (David Hewlett), and Daphne (Uma Thurman) decide to take on boarders to help with the expenses. Among them are Lionel (Crispin Glover), an aspiring clothing designer who pretends to be gay in order to be taken seriously, and Sheryl (Sheila Kelley), a young student who gives a demonstration of glossolalia (speaking in tongues), her area of study. Chloe, an artist who specializes in body-painting her friends against a backdrop of well-known masterpieces, decides to channel her talents into calendar art. By day, he works at a dead-end security job. By night, he is Eddie Presley (Duane Whitaker, who also wrote the screenplay), Elvis impersonator extraordinaire. Sadly, though, Eddie's life seems to be falling apart. The clubs he performs in have gotten increasingly smaller, his girlfriend has left him, and he can barely afford to live out of his van. But when he gets a chance at a comeback show at a seedy Hollywood nightclub, Eddie sees it as a chance to turn his luck around. Unfortunately, the performance won't go quite as he plans it. A normal video store clerk, Ed (McConaughey), doesn't realize what he's getting himself into when he allows a television executive (DeGeneres) to begin filming his life 24 hours a day.
