It seemed like just another day when the residents of California awoke from their peaceful slumber. The usual pink smog filled the air, creating a foggy haze over the mid-morning sunrise as the population rubbed their eyes, ready to face another...wait a minute, PINK smog? On further inspection the residents discover, to their horror, that disaster has struck The Golden State overnight. The entire Latin-American population has been wiped out in one fell swoop, meaning that one third of the citizens have suddenly vanished! With the governor conspicuous by his absence, it's up to the redoubtable Senator Steven Abercrombie III (John Getz) to grapple with the problem. Unfortunately Abercrombie is widely known for his anti-immigration stance, and with California falling apart he hardly seems to be the right man to take charge of the situation! Hope comes in the unlikely figure of TV news reporter Lila Rodriguez (Yareli Arizmendi), a Hispanic who has somehow survived the mass exodus. But a demented military geneticist holds Rodriguez under lock and key where he tries to extract her DNA, believing he can create a vaccine to prevent other ethnic groups from vanishing. Money-hungry blonde flapper Marie (Phyllis Haver) seduces a wealthy, bespectacled, middle-aged man (Jean Hersholt) into neglecting his wife and children, in this film by cinema pioneer D.W. Griffith--a remake of his own 1914 film of the same name. While the family waits at home, the man is out at the nightclubs, lavishing money on Marie while her shady boyfriend, Babe (Don Alvardo) waits in the wings. Finally the man's spunky daughter (Sally O'Neil) goes over to Marie's apartment with a gun, ready to defend her family at any cost, only to fall for smooth-talking Babe, much to her father's horror. Through it all, Belle Bennett suffers in typically dramatic Griffith fashion as the neglected wife and mother.This film is an interesting hybrid of pre-code sophistication and old-fashioned morality play, indicative of a moment in Griffith's career when he realized his brand of social criticism had grown out of touch with the public. In the tradition of genial stories of British schoolchildren defying a comically overbearing authority comes A FEAST AT MIDNIGHT. Magnus is sent to an exclusive boys' school in Dover while his father lies in convalescence. Having gotten used to his father's exquisite cooking, the first thing Magnus notices when he arrives is the ultra-bland, albeit healthy, food that the boys are served. With the help of his father's recipes, Magnus sets out to make friends and rock the boat by sneaking into the kitchen each night and preparing a series of delicious desserts. However, Magnus and his newfound friends run into trouble when the strict Latin teacher, Mr. Longfellow (Christopher Lee), begins to suspect something is afoot in the kitchen. A FEAST AT MIDNIGHT has a light but poignant tone with scenes that satirize other films and genres.
