Starsky& Hutch/The Big Bounce (DVD) Starsky& Hutch/The Big Bounce (DVD) » Starsky& Hutch/The Big Bounce (DVD)

STARSKY& HUTCH: Coming off the heels of his hilarious college romp OLD SCHOOL, director Todd Phillips returns with a film that mocks the television cop dramas of the 1970s. Based on the crime-fighting television series of the same name, STARSKY& HUTCH follows the exploits of two west coast detectives. David Starsky (Ben Stiller) is a by-the-books officer who would like nothing more than to expose his partner Hutch's bouts of inconsistency. Ken Hutch Hutchinson (Owen Wilson) is a far more open-minded spirit with a tendency for meandering. Added to the mix is the world's coolest informant, Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg), who wears an endless parade of stylish outfits. Starsky and Hutch's rival is the charming yet brutal Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn), a maniacal drug lord with an absurd moustache who is prone to dramatic outbursts. Phillips uses freeze frames and slow-motion to up the comic ante, while Stiller and Wilson prove that they are a truly compatible duo, and, finally, Will Ferrell makes yet another scene-stealing cameo--all factors that ensure a long shelf life for this raucous spoof.THE BIG BOUNCE: Based on the Elmore Leonard novel that inspired both the 1969 film and this remake, THE BIG BOUNCE is a comic film noir about an everyman who finds trouble in the form of a beautiful blonde. Jack Ryan (Owen Wilson) is a small-time scam artist who is determined to leave that life behind after yet another run-in with the law. But when he meets the mistress of his former boss, Ray Ritchie (Gary Sinese), all bets are off. Nancy (newcomer Sara Foster) is hot, mischievous, and up to no good, but Jack is too smitten to use his better judgment. It isn't long before he's agreed to help her steal $200,000 from Ray. Along the way, he must contend with a series of potentially shady characters, who might not be what they seem (Morgan Freeman, Charlie Sheen, and Bebe Neuwirth).Directed with an easygoing approach that fits perfectly with the laid back Hawaiian locales, T

Elektra » Elektra

In this sequel to DAREDEVIL, the Marvel Comic series is drawn upon once again to present the mysterious and powerful character of Elektra (Jennifer Garner), a professional assassin with special skills. Clad in a red suit, she relies on her mental acuity, which allows her to see a short distance into the future. With this talent she can stalk her victims and kill them before they are even aware of her presence. She is cold and introspective to a fault, shunning all human contact in favor of meditating on her powers. Even so, she is haunted by the memories of her youth, when as a small girl she witnessed her mother's brutal murder by a mysterious horned enemy. When a mission leads her to a father and daughter, Mark (Goran Visnjic) and Abby (Kirsten Prout), something deep inside her causes her to abort the assassination. But before she knows it, a team of the highly dangerous ninja experts called the Hand are sent to take out Mark and Abby themselves. The leader of the Hand, Kirigi (Will Yun Lee), has a greater objective in mind for Mark and Abby, and Elektra decides to defend the helpless twosome until she solves the mystery behind why the Hand wants them dead.
Highlights of the film center on Elektra's impressive moves in her red-hot suit, flinging her Sai weapons with menacing accuracy. Plentiful action scenes and special effects certainly add some high-intrigue moments to the plot, but there is also a softer side to ELEKTRA, which is about mothers and daughters. Elektra frequently flashes back to her mother's death and her memories of youth, while in present time she is forming a bond with young Abby, providing for some tender moments.
