One of the most engaging George Cukor comedies, this was the director's eighth and last film with Katharine Hepburn. With exceptionally witty dialogue (the Kanin/Gordon script got an Academy Award nomination), PAT AND MIKE was tailor made for its two stars, presenting a picture of sexual politics far ahead of its time. The film tells the story of the unlikely professional and romantic relationship between a classy female golfer and a street smart sports promoter. Pat Pemberton (Katharine Hepburn) is a physical education teacher who, entering a golf tournament, is approached by Mike Conovan (Spencer Tracy), a sports promoter and manager. Impressed by her game, he convinces her to sign a pro contract to compete in various sporting competitions. Now it is Mike's task to get Pat into professional shape. Hepburn did all of her own golfing in the finished film. Writer-director Kwyn Bader's debut feature is an extremely likeable romantic comedy that features a star-making performance from Hill Harper. Harper plays Theodorus Melville, a mixed-race suburban youth who discovers at an early age that he has a penchant for falling in love with the wrong girls--most often, his friends' girlfriends. Barely surviving college, where he slept with the girlfriend of the football team's star running back, Theodorus eventually settles in New York City with his best friend, whose gorgeous Trinidadian girlfriend, Mona (Sandrine Holt), can't hide her attraction for him. Meanwhile, Theodorus is in the midst of a passionate affair with Frances (Nicole Ari Parker), a firecracker of an actress whose mental stability is questionable. Working as a waiter in a coffee shop, Theodorus befriends the bumbling Samantha (Laurel Holloman), a sweet-natured woman who is married to Gabe (David Moscow), a walking time bomb. Mismatching the two principal characters in a movie has become a comedy staple in Hollywood, and the tradition continues in director Les Mayfield`s THE MAN. Andy Fidler (Eugene Levy) has a cheery outlook on life. Even a less than exciting job selling dental products can`t wipe the smile from his face. But when he winds up in Detroit for a dental convention and is wrongly identified as an arms dealer, his smile is in danger of disappearing for good. Tough-as-nails cop Derrick Vann (Samuel L. Jackson) has set up an operation to catch the gang who run with the villain Fidler has been mistaken for. Eager to find him after the group of gun runners put a permanent end to his partner`s career, Vann concocts a screwball scheme in which Fidler will impersonate the crook he resembles, while also trying to shake the Internal Affairs agents who are closely trailing him. Sam Jackson steals THE MAN from under Levy`s nose, with some impressive, snappy dialogue reminiscent of his role as Jules Winnfield in PULP FICTION. Driven to the brink of insanity by the inane banter spewing from Levy`s mouth, and a flatulence problem at the other end, Jackson fits into the role like a true pro. The film benefits from an elementary plot that simply allows the laughs to come thick and fast, and evolves only to allow Jackson to display further exasperation at his oblivious partner`s behavior. A cut above the gross-out comedies it will undoubtedly be compared to, THE MAN is a deliciously silly film that benefits from some strong performances.
