Taking a cue from Saturday Night Live, members of HBO's The Chris Rock Show make their first foray into the feature film arena with POOTIE TANG. Written and directed by SNL cowriter Louis C.K. and produced by Rock, the film reintroduces the character of Pootie Tang (Lance Crouther), an inner-city role model who has a speech impediment that makes him virtually impossible to comprehend. When corporate monster Dick Lecter (Robert Vaughn) learns that Pootie Tang's positive preaching is hurting the sales of his cigarettes, malt liquor, and fast food hamburger chains, he uses his sexy wife, Ireenie (Jennifer Coolidge), to lure Pootie Tang into signing an exclusive contract with him. This causes a Pootie Tang backlash, forcing him out of the inner-city, onto a farm, where he begins to accept his quiet new life. Luckily, his best friend, Trucky (J.B. Smoove), tracks him down in the nick of time, giving Pootie Tang the inspiration he needs to return to the city and reinstate order and optimism. Comedian Bernie Mac gets his first starring vehicle in this foulmouthed baseball comedy. He plays Milwaukee Brewer Stan Ross, a self-centered heavy hitter who retires from the game after 3,000 hits, expecting an automatic entry into the Baseball Hall of Fame. The complication is that when Hall of Fame officials finally--after nine long years--re-do his tally for official consideration, they realize three of his hits where counted twice, so he's only Mr. 2,997. As his whole life's been revolving around the 3,000 mark, Stan has no choice but to sign up with the Brewers yet again, even though he's now 47 and has not exactly been exercising during his retirement. What could have been just another feel-good sports film--with Stan learning the value of friendship and working together as he gets a second chance at being a team-player--is turned into a laconic, dryly amusing film thanks to Mac's vast array of comic tics, tricks, and perfect comedic timing. Angela Bassett is the smart sports reporter who was once Stan's lover and now won't give him the time of day. And Paul Sorvino sulks excellently as the coach Ross betrayed back in the day. A bizarre romp of a Canadian road movie, the premise of AMERICAN BEER is one that many Gen-Xers will identify with: four young men have left their Alberta homeland to travel to California in pursuit of cheap beer and a good time. Of course their vehicle is sub-par, and breaks down in the middle of the Badlands; the four split up to go in search of the necessary alternator, each encountering the underbelly of American culture in a particularly riotous way.
