FEVER PITCH: The Farrelly Brothers (THERE`S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, DUMB & DUMBER) take a slight departure from their signature breed of over-the-top, gross-out humor and opt instead for sensitive restraint with this genuinely sweet love story. Credit is due in part to the writing team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (SPANGLISH) who adapt Nick Hornby`s popular British novel, moving it to Boston and exchanging the protagonist`s obsession with soccer for an all-consuming love of baseball. Ever since his first childhood visit to Fenway Park, easygoing schoolteacher Ben (Jimmy Fallon) has been in love with the Boston Red Sox. When he meets a successful workaholic named Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore), he warns her that his devotion to the Sox
has been a problem in his past relationships. On the brink of turning 30, Lindsey is eager to make what seems like an otherwise promising romance work, and she agrees to go with Ben to opening day (of the eventful 2004 season when the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years).As baseball season proceeds, the truly obsessive nature of Ben`s passion is revealed, and a love triangle is set up in which baseball plays the role of the other woman. Lindsey`s feelings for Ben are put to the test again and again as his love for the game threatens to outweigh his feelings for her. While the film`s structure is pretty typical of a romantic comedy, FEVER PITCH offers quirky characters that ring true. Fallon and Barrymore display a genuine chemistry and Fallon proves (after leaving SNL) that he can pull off the romantic lead. Gene Kelly`s light-footed comedy is a guide to the psyche of the suburban male, circa the mid-1960s. Walter Matthau is Paul Manning, a happily married father of one who is nonetheless intrigued by his pal Ed`s many extramarital affairs. In a series of lessons and parables, Ed gives Paul a crash course in how to have the perfect affair while still being considerate of one`s wife. Paul is fascinated and eager, but Ed urges caution so as to perfect the technique. When he thinks Paul is ready, Ed makes him do a
trial run,
with Ed standing in for the hypothetical girl. Paul passes with flying colors, and when Ed gives him the go-ahead, a likely candidate seems to fall into his lap--literally. The movie is peppered with vignettes of Ed`s cautionary tales, featuring cameos from countless Hollywood stars. Matthau is his usual brilliantly dry comic self in this tongue-in-cheek exploration of infidelity and marriage.

Buzz Johnson (Bud Abbott) and Stanley Livingston (Lou Costello) go on an African safari in search of treasure. Buzz is a bookseller who tricks Diana Emerson (Hillary Brooke) into believing that his fellow bookseller Stanley is an expert on Africa. They are thereby abducted by Diana s henchmen who expect the two self proclaimed hunters to lead her to an African tribe. On the way there they run up against giant apes, lion tamers, and a wild river. Eventually Buzz makes his way back to the States and Stanley lucks into some diamonds and purchases the store where they both used to work. By the end, Stanley hires Buzz to operate the elevator. Charles Barton directs some great gags and funny comedy routines in this lively film. This story contains the much-loved theme of Lou being terrorized by an evil pushy woman who eventually gets so fed up with his ineptitude that she wants him dead. Look for great comic turns by Martin Wilkins as the dreaded Cannibal Chief and Shemp Howard as Gunner.
