Van Wilder (Ryan Reynolds) is a college stud who is in no rush to finish his coursework and graduate. In fact, after six years of partying his way through Coolidge College, his parents have decided to stop paying his tuition, but Van Wilder isn't worried--he just needs to find a way to pay it himself and keep the fun coming. His fundraising ideas include a topless tutorial service and other raunchy schemes, which only help add to Van's Big Man on Campus status.A romance develops between Van and Gwen (Tara Reid), who is writing an investigative piece on Van for the school newspaper. Through his exploits, Van eventually begins to turn over a new leaf, and finally grow up.
But not before there are plenty of opportunities for the kind of gross-out humor that teen flicks like THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and AMERICAN PIE have made so popular in recent years. The main set piece here involves dog semen injected into eclairs. Marking a return to the low-budget territory that launched his career in 1989 (with SEX, LIES, AND VIDEOTAPE), Steven Soderbergh pulls together this freewheeling comedy that is stuffed with an onslaught of visual and verbal puns. Soderbergh plays dual roles as Fletcher Munson and Dr. Jeffrey Korchek. Munson is a nerdy copywriter who finds himself under an extreme amount of pressure when his boss dies, leaving him to write the upcoming speech for T. Azimuth Schwitters, a revered spiritual leader. Korchek is a dentist who begins to have an affair with Munson's wife but finds himself in trouble when he falls for a new patient. Also thrown into the mix is Elmo Oxygen (David Jensen), an orange-jumpsuit-wearing exterminator who spends more time sleeping with his clients than doing actual work. By the time the moment comes for Schwitters to give his speech, the life of each character has been turned completely upside down. Soderbergh mocks, satirizes, and criticizes the late 20th century's hurried, soulless atmosphere, including religion, marriage, the media, the workplace, and male-female sexual relations. Fetching Sara Moore (Elizabeth Hurley) thinks that she is a happily married woman until process server Joe Tyler (Matthew Perry) shows up at her Manhattan apartment to serve her with divorce papers. Sara gives Joe a run for his money, fleeing to the Estee Lauder Salon (a nice touch for those who know Hurley as the company's representative) and dodging him all around New York City. Realizing that she stands to lose everything in the divorce to her Texan cattle-rancher husband (Bruce Campbell) if she is served first, Sara hires Joe to turn the tables and serve her husband first. As the two leave New York for Texas in pursuit of Gordon, they engage in luggage carousel hijinx, have a run-in with a bull, and find themselves at a Monster Truck rally, among other places. Of course, true love is always just around the corner as Sara and Joe spend more time together in pursuit of saving her millions. Vincent Pastore plays Joe's foil, Tony, who has been sabotaging Joe's work for months in order to impress the boss (Cedric The Entertainer Kyles) and become the company's star process server.
