Joel and Ethan Coen transport Homer's ODYSSEY to the depression-era South in the silly, fun comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson star as three escaped fugitives on the run in Mississippi. Their adventures through the barren landscape includes run-ins with a soothsayer, a trio of Sirens, a Bible-salesman Cyclops, as well as other archetypes from Southern folklore and pop-culture including a young blues musician, the Klan, and bank robber Baby Face Nelson. Soon they are caught up in a vicious gubernatorial campaign that would make Huey Long proud.The Coen brothers mix in a host of cinematic references in O BROTHER, including SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, COOL HAND LUKE, I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG, and even dashes of the Three Stooges. The cast, including Holly Hunter, Charles Durning, John Goodman, Chris Thomas King, and Michael Badalucco, is charmingly bewildering in a way that only a Coen brothers' cast can be. Adam Lazarus's (Dylan Walsh) life presents plenty of comedic hijinks for viewers of director Aaron Mendelsohn's CHAPTER ZERO. In a state of despair after his novel is rejected by a major publisher, Adam also has to face up to the fact that he is rapidly approaching his 30th birthday. However, he finds some catharsis through his writing, especially when making an exhaustive list of all the things that have gone hopelessly wrong in his life. But when Adam's friend Jane (Laurel Holloman) reads his musings and greatly enjoys them, she puts them in the hands of a publisher and...you guessed it, Adam becomes the subject of a ferocious bidding war between rival publishing houses. Self-made celebrity and outlaw of gross-out comedy, Tom Green (of MTV's TOM GREEN SHOW) makes the leap to the big screen with the outrageous semi-autobiographical FREDDY GOT FINGERED. Starring as Gord Brody, a slacker fast-approaching 30, yet still living in his father's basement, Green is his usual obtusely hilarious, polymorphously perverse self. Physical comedy ascends to the realm of extreme performance art as Brody's unachievable lifelong dream to become an animator causes him to clash with his hardened father (played by the steely and equally funny Rip Torn.) A furtive love affair with a wheelchair-bound rocket scientist and the disturbing hijinks of a troublesome younger brother named Freddy form the core of the sublimely stupid plot that serves mainly as a platform from which Green launches his incredible and often irrational comedic fare. The Donovans move from Los Angeles to Connecticut, ready to start a new phase of their life.
