Marissa has never achieved the success of her mother, a famous figure in the art world. She is always seeking a new outlet to express herself as well as an empty seat on her therapist's couch. She meets Paul, a shy neighbor, who is having similar problems with an overbearing parent. However, Paul is able to use his father's influence to have his first book published. As Paul struggles to write, Marissa is doing all she can to keep from giving up her dream of making a film.
